How to Make Time for Wedding Photos without Missing Your Own Party

Your wedding day will fly by in a blur of hugs, happy tears, and questionable dance moves. And while you definitely want gorgeous couple portraits, you also don’t want to vanish for half the reception. The good news? You can have both—stunning portraits and plenty of time to soak up the celebrations. Here’s how!

1. Plan a First Look for Extra Time Together

If you’re up for seeing each other before the ceremony, a first look is a game-changer. Not only does it give you a quiet, intimate moment before the whirlwind of the day begins, but it also means you can take some (or even all!) of your couple portraits ahead of time. More time for photos and more time for the drinks reception? Yes, please!

2. Use Transition Moments Smartly

There are natural breaks in your day where we can grab a few portraits without cutting into your reception time. Think: right after the ceremony while guests are mingling, or just before heading into the reception. A quick stroll together, a champagne toast, or even a quiet moment away from the crowd can make for the most beautiful, effortless shots.

While most photographers suggest diving straight into the couple portraits after the ceremony, my trick is usually to wait until the dinner call. It usually takes about 20-30 minutes for your guests to be seated and get their orders taken. You get the whole place to yourselves, you don’t miss any of the reception and – most importantly – it’s the best feeling to soak in all the love and joy after seeing everyone you love!

3. Sneak Away for a Quick Sunset Session

Golden hour—aka the dreamy, glowy light just before sunset—is pure magic for wedding portraits. And the best part? It only takes 10-15 minutes. You won’t even be gone long enough for anyone to miss you, but you’ll get some of the most stunning shots of the day. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse for a little breather together before jumping back into the party.

4. Make It Part of the Celebration

Who says couple portraits have to be a separate “thing”? Turn them into part of the fun! Take a relaxed walk with a drink in hand, have a quiet moment in your candlelit reception space before guests enter, or sneak away after dinner for a quick nighttime photo!

5. Trust Your Photographer to Keep It Quick & Fun

The key to making portraits feel effortless? Choosing a photographer who knows how to capture the magic fast. I promise I don’t need an hour-long photoshoot—just a few well-planned moments to get those dreamy shots. You focus on enjoying the day, and I’ll make sure your portraits feel natural, fun, and stress-free.

The Best of Both Worlds

You don’t have to choose between beautiful portraits and being present at your wedding—you can have both! With a little planning (and a photographer who knows how to work quickly), you’ll get stunning images and be right in the middle of the action, celebrating with the people who matter most.
